Looking back at Decorex 2016

Decorex 2016, South Africas’ premier décor, design and lifestyle exhibition showcase took place in August this year at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Jozi. As one of the leading (and oldest) suppliers and installers of wood, laminate and vinyl flooring, Floors Direct just had to be there!

“The exhibitors took such effort with their stands, which really added to the overall atmosphere and experience. The visitor turnout was excellent and we were happy to have been extremely busy at our stand,” says Floors Direct’s Dale Gurney.

The Floors Direct stand was a showpiece, its large timber beams, clean lines and fantastic range of products reflected the brand and the energy of the staff, which ultimately contributed to their success at the show. In addition to this, the new disruptive vinyl ‘Gerflor Texline’ range was introduced so the stand received a lot of interest with its exclusive imported ranges from Gerflor in France.

Visitors to the Floors Direct stand also had the chance to win a Gerflor Texline floor in conjunction with Decorex SA, as well as access to the numerous show specials.

“We have lots in store for 2017 and all we can say is – watch this space,” concludes Gurney.

Decorex SA’s take on our beautiful GerFlor Texline range

Great blog by Thebe Reed Exhibitions and Decorex SA on the DIY flooring available from Floors Direct. Their main focus is on our fabulous GerFlor Texline range. Because it’s not just durable, it’s also aesthetically pleasing. Therefore it’s a true investment to better your home. It’s almost too good to be true!

Texline is manufactured in France and exclusively available from Floors Direct. Take a look at the different colours and options on our Vinyl Products page. Also as they say in their post, “It offers more choice, better quality, in half the time and at half the price!”.

Housekeeping hints to abate allergies

Housekeeping Hints to Abate Allergies

Housekeeping hints to abate allergies

Keeping your house clean can help eradicate allergy triggers and help alleviate your allergic symptoms.

Here are some ways to keep your house clean while keeping your allergies under control:

  • Vacuum weekly.
Ensure that your vacuum has a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter as some allergens are too small to be caught by a regular vacuum filter. HEPA-equipped vacuums shoot less particles back into the room as you vacuum.
  • Don't use scented detergents.
Heavily fragranced cleaners and detergents can trigger symptoms. Instead, look for fragrance-free products.
  • Don't shampoo carpets.
The leftover moisture could cause mold growth or increase dust mites.
  • Rugs can trap allergens.
Having vinyl, laminate, or hardwood floors reduces your exposure to triggers. If rugs are a must, get smaller rugs that you can toss into the laundry.
  • Use a damp mop and cloth.
They'll trap allergens instead of knocking them back into the air.
  • Sweep outside entryways.
The cleaner your path or patio is, the less likely someone is to track dust or pollen into your house.
  • Take shoes off before you go in the house.
This prevents pollens and other triggers from getting tracked in.
  • Cut the clutter.
Piles of boxes or clothing can trap dust and allergens like dust mites. This shouldn’t be something that you are cleaning around. If you don’t need the boxes on-hand then pack them in storage.
  • Wear a mask while cleaning.
When you're done with your housework it is best to leave the house for a few hours. It will limit your exposure to allergens you kicked up into the air.

In addition to maintenance, the choice of flooring products that you install can also increase or reduce the amount of allergens in your house. Chat to one of our expert teams today for assistance with this!

Fight the mud – Keeping Carpets Clean

Fight the mud - Keeping Carpets Clean

Fight the mud Keeping carpets clean

The rains are coming to Gauteng… and that means… muddy floors.

In many cultures around the world it is customary to remove your shoes and don a pair of slippers before stepping inside someone’s home so as to not track mud and dirt through the house. The hosts will have a basket at the front door filled with slippers to slip on when you come in.

While this makes practical sense, if it isn’t the cultural norm people tend to feel unnerved by it.

Although most modern carpets include stain-proofing factory treatments, this does not mean that the carpet fibres will resist all stains. Any spills and marks should be removed as soon as they happen. Prompt action will prevent the spillage from penetrating the fibres and becoming fixed.

Regular vacuuming is probably the most important part of caring for carpet, but this cannot remove all of the dirt that has been tracked in. The gradual buildup of dirt dulls the carpet’s colours and patterns. Investing in a high-quality vacuum cleaner will increase the lifespan of your carpets and keep them looking fresh and clean.

Dry-extraction systems are popular because of their very rapid drying time. Dry-cleaning is often faster and less labour-intensive than wet-extraction systems. The fact that dry-cleaning uses biodegradable and environment-friendly materials means that this system produces no health complications, and the antibacterial properties remain for a while after cleaning.

Wet-extraction carpet cleaning is often recommended for high-traffic areas in offices every three to six months, in addition to a regular dry-powder carpet cleaning service. The cleaning of large areas such as open plan offices, will invariably require the services of a competent contract cleaning company with the right equipment. Balancing the need for rapid drying and the need to remove the most soil is a key technique that should be inherent in any reputable contract cleaning company.

Finally, an often overlooked ways of keeping carpets in good condition is to use dirt-trap matting to prevent as much dirt as possible from being walked onto the carpet. There is no doubt that the reduced cleaning and maintenance requirements and the extended life of the carpet is worth it.

Most environmentally conscious buyers hesitate when thinking about adding wooden flooring to their homes. We have all seen pictures of vastly devastated forests, but there are many wood choices that are sustainable and don’t add to the despoiling of the environment. One of these environmentally-friendly sources comes from bamboo.

Bamboo flooring has been around for quite some time, it initially faced slower market penetration due to underdeveloped manufacturing processes but has come a long way since and is now a viable, aesthetically appealing and extremely durable flooring solution. Due to these employed modern technologies bamboo is fast becoming a favoured flooring option for the eco-conscious.

The eco-friendly properties of bamboo are mainly due to the fact that it is a grass rather than a tree and is extremely fast-growing compared to hardwoods. On average, bamboo is capable of reaching maturity and is ready to harvest in five years. Additionally it can be harvested again and again from the same plant since it is a grass. Compare that to an individual hardwood tree, which takes anywhere from three decades to more than a hundred years to mature.

Bamboo is exceedingly resilient and can take a greater impact than most hardwoods without denting. Other outstanding properties include its dimensional stability from both heat and moisture. Due to being a reconstituted product, the manufacturing processes limit the likelihood of gapping, cupping, or warping. It is also less expensive than many hardwoods and can be purchased for nailed- down, stapled-down, glued-down, or floated installations.

With so many positive attributes, it’s no wonder that bamboo is becoming the hottest trend in flooring. Not only for its excellent eco-friendliness, but also due to the declining availability of natural hardwood.
